Hotkeys You Should Support

Jan 14 , 2008

Shortcut keys that all applications should consider supporting.

Synopsis: Uh, do this. It's not meant to be some sort of paean (?) to MS or Office in particular, but billions of users have learned them.

  • F1 for help.  Perhaps some day, this will be an unnecessary relic, but probably not.

  • F2 to edit

  • F5 to refresh
  • Control-Z to undo
  • Control-S to save
  • Control-C/X/V for copy/cut/paste
  • Control-B for bold
  • Control-A to select all
  • Control 0/1 for "fit to window" and "zoom to 100%," credited to Adobe?
  • Page Up/Down   I had to add this late, after noticing for the millionth time that the Print Preview in IE does not support them.

Thanks for reading!

"My interest in usability arose from the pain and tears of patching the wounds of suffering interface designs with the inadequate bandages of help files and user guides." — Daniel Cohen
